The dimerus cichlid is another ugly fish native to southern Brazil and Paraguay. It is brown in ground color, with some dark tints between scales. There is a dark slash under the eye, a black blotch at midbody, and a black spot on the upper caudal peduncle. There may be a partial horizontal bar from the eye to the blotch. The fins are usually yellow-gold, and the tail fin is slightly pearly. They live in soft water of about 80 degrees and pH 7.

What C. dimerus lacks in beauty, it makes up for in odd personality. Although they are only 4-5 inches long, they are prodigious diggers and hate plants. They breed easily in captivity, and like to dance and flare and do practice runs before they spawn, which they do on flat substrates. They can lay up to 400 eggs, and are good parents. They dig quite a few pits, and put different fry in different pits and move them around a lot. They are very peaceful omnivores, and can be kept with any fish too big for them to eat. They even get along with Angelfish and Discus. For photos, see "Images of Cicihlsoma dimerus."
