Is there a general rule for compatibility?

There are few very general rules. Don't mix Goldfish with Tropicals. Usually dont mix Rift Lake African Cichlids with Asian or New World tropicals. Other than those you have to check on the individual species temperament, water paramters including temperature, pH and hardness, and size relative to one another.
