Collecting Gulf Stream juveniles here

Long ago when I lived in Boston and was in a dive club, we used to go to Rhode Island in the fall and collect (by diving/snorkeling) tropical juveniles that had come up via the Gulf Stream . It's been a long time since then...do people do that here? For themselves or for donation? I'd love to do that again.

There are so many regulations regarding collecting now I haven't heard of anyone getting anything these days. I get plants from the local lake systems but they don't last too long at home.

Yes it's still done. In the fall depending on the number of break off eddies moving towards land. You can find an unbelievable mix of Marine things. In a great year you can get an assortment of sea horses. Saragossa Sea Horses etc. Along with local species. Fish, Baby Barracuda, Look ups. etc. If you are looking for exotic sea horses the best place to look is off shore in the weed lines late August, September. Actually Long Island is a better place to look than Rhode Island. Try the Sore Thumb Fire Island Inlet in the early Fall.

Last time fishing in great kills i found a heard of seahorses in the surf. Awesome little cold water species. You can also find a variety of triggers and killies.

Our local species of sea horses range in color from a real dark brown to a dark green. If you take a sein net and pull it thru eel grass near the inlets of Long Island. You will def get some sea horses. Actually the mascot of Jones Beach is the local sea horse. The saragassin Sea Horses that you can occasionally find are amazing looking.
