Clchlid Profiles: Trimac
 

The Trimac, Amphilophus trimaculatus, is a spectacular Central American cichlid and one of the key ancestors to the Flowerhorn, males get 15 inches, females about 9. They are usually blue or yellow or faded in blue base color, with a bright red opercular spot, a bright red eye, and 5 spots in a row in the middle rear of the body. They also have a promient dark forehead spot. They inhabit El Salavador, Honduras and Nicaragua. They prefer neutral pH and temperatures of 75 to 82 degrees. They are very territorial, and eat almost any meaty food. They are very prone to Hexamita infection, so should not be fed live feeders in captivity. The males have big humps like Flowerhorns. They are good parents, and take close care of their eggs and fry. They require at least a 70 gallon tank for a mature male, 100 for a pair.

Along with the Midas Cichlid, this is one of the species most prominent in Flowerhorn bloodlines.
