piston pump
I've never seen one in person, but was fascinated by seeing them on YouTube. Wanted to know if anyone still uses this type of air pumps personally?

Piston Pumps
The last one I ever saw was the one I had on my big tank back in the 60s
It was a somewhat noisy thing and needed constant adjustment to keep it pumping properly The piston was somewhat like a ticking windup namtle clock The sound is intermittent so noticeable where a vibrator pump is more like white noise which is more easily tuned out There was a pressure can between the pump and the gang valves so that the pressure was equalized across the pressure and recovery phases of the stroke and a check valves on both sides of the pressure can (belt and suspenders kinds guy) since the pump sat on the floor four feet or so below the water surface and I didn't want to risk the pump sucking water down on the recovery (but I never had much faith in those check valves with the springs in them) I couldn't buy one when I set up my tank four or five years ago and wanted to make sure I had more than enough air |
Times have shanged
That piston pump I said they don't make I bought when I set up my tank 4 or 5 years ago It doesn't sound anything like the piston pumps of the days of yore This is just a hum like a vibrator pump If I hadn't seen it pictured in the F&S catalog I would still think I had a vibrator pump It is the Coralife Super Luft pump It is fairly large and heavy and puts out a lot of heat as well as a lot of air It has been running constantly since I got it and has never given me any trouble You probably don't want it in your livingroom but I sleep 5' from it But then I live in a bell so it acts as white noise to lessen the intrusiveness of the never ending ringing |
