sump size
How do you know what size sump to use for each tank?
Is there a rule of thumb for size ratio? |
Generally the bigger the better. If you can somehow fit a 180G sump under a 10G tank, you should certainly do that. :chuckle:
I never heard of a formula but I've used a 40G sump with my 135G tank and now use 75G fuge with my 180G tank. If I had a house where my sump room would be below (in the basement) and my show tank on the first floor I would hook up multiple refugia possibly exceeding total volume of the show tank. |
Yep, as bderen said, the bigger the better, go with whatever you can fit under your tank leaving some elbow room to perform maintenance tasks. Any sump/refugium is better then no fuge at all, even these relatively small hang on tank refugia are somewhat effective and interesting to watch.

The formula I have heard is the sump should be atleast 25% of the main tank, but you are right the bigger the better. You can not do wrong by making a sump to big. In this case bigger is definately better, no matter what they say!!!!!!
