Most reefers advise between 10 to 12 hours a day.
Also make sure you have atleast 3 watts per gal, more if you have sps coral

I normally have my actinics on for 12 hrs a day and 10K on for about 10hrs a day. During summer months I have the actinics on for 10 hours and 10K bulbs for about 7-8 hours to minimize impact on the tank's temperature. I use T5s though, so metali halides would normally run shorter probably for about 6 hrs a day, with actinics running for 9-10 hours.

Really depends on the type of bulbs you have. Metal halides would be on much shorter than fluorescent bulbs. What type of light fixture do you have Squeaky?

It will vary from tank to tank, depending on the type of bulbs, the wattage even the type of coral you have. You have to feel it out for your tank, and see what works best.
