Cichlid Profiles - Honduran Red Point
 

This is a fairly new fish to the hobby, and one whose classification is stll debated. It is either Archocentrus sp. or Amantitlana sp. Honduran Red Point. It is a very beautififul small to medium sized (males up to 4, females up to 3 inch) cichlid found in Honduras, primarily the Rio Danti area. The males are irridescent blue and green with red-orange tail and dorsal fins, the females are powder blue with navy blue fins. The males have longer fins, a small nuchal hump, and a rounder head. Females have a red-orange belly blotch. Both have 6 dark irregular vertical stripes and a dot on their caudal peduncle, which resembles a Convict Cichlid. They have a more beak shaped mouth than a Convict. They swim from top to bottom, and are territorial when breeding and slightly aggressive. There is a also a Rio Mongo Redpoint, which is probably Amantitlana siquia.

In captivity, they can be kept in tanks 20 gallons and larger. They like water temperature of 73-82, with slight hardness and pH 7.2 to 8. They can be kept with other cichlids over 2 inches. They are omnivores which eat most flakes and small pellets.They interbreed with Convicts to produce what are called Blue Convicts. See "Images of Honduran Red Points" for pictures.
