Cichlid Profiles - Apistogramma amoena (aka Pleasant Cichlid)

The poor Pleasant Cichlid finds itself betwixt and between as there is not yet agreement on whether it is its own species or a lineage of Agassiz's Cichlid. It comes from the Rio Ampiyacu in Peru and the Amazon. The ground color is yellow or white with a gold suffused head and gold gill cover. A horizontal black line runs through the midbody and there is a large black spot on the beginning of the tail. There is also a row of 5 or 6 small blotches on the bottom of the dorsal fin and extending onto the scales of the body. It has a pointed snout for bottom feeding. it is found at pH 5-6 in 78-81 degree soft water.

It is cave breeder whose eggs are laid on the ceiling and tended by the female. It will usually spawn after a few weeks of eating live worms and a 30% water change. It prefers to live in pairs or a harem. A pair can spawn in a 5 gallon tank, but 10 is recommended. Pictures are available at 'Images of Apistogramma amoena, but only the first one is well authenticated, and lots of the other photos are of different species.
