Cichlid Profiles - Dovii or Wolf Cichlid

Nandopsis dovii may be the least popular cichlid pet, except among rich teenage sadists with vampire fetishes.. It is too big, too ugly and way too violent for most cichlid collector's tastes. In the wild, they are almost obligate piscivores, and spent most of their time patrolling their territory looking for fish to eat. They hate everything including their mates, other big fish, plants and fingers. They are intelligent and owner responsive, but be aware that their territory in captivity extends way beyound their tanks. They have been known to smash tank glass. This 2 foot fish needs a 500 gallon tank to itself.

The base color of Wolf cichlids in silver-grey in males and yellow in females. They have a long, irregular, thick stripe from behind the eye to the caudal peduncle. Males have many black or dark blue body spots, females are more drab. Huge adults get irridescent, and the males get large humps. They tolerate water temperatures from 73-83 degrees, pH 6.5 to 7.6, and moderately hard water.

They are found is sandy botttomed rivers and lakes in Central America south of Guatermala. In captivity their large tank should have sand or fine gravel, a large cave, and no plants or tank mates of any kind. They need to eat feeder fish as they are lazy when not hunting. They will accept large pices of homemade food, but ignore pellets for the most part. They are messy eaters. and need massive filtration and large water changes. They have an elongate muzzle and deep mouth with protrusible lips so they can eat large prey.

They are very hard to breed in captivity as the males hate the females as well. When they do, they are flat substrate spawners. They really are about the most extreme monsterfish you can keep as a pet.
