Cichlid Profiles - Apistogramma aguarico (New Species 2013)

Apistogramma aguarico was just discovered in Cuyabeno National Park of the Rio Lagartococha, tributary of the Rio Napo in Peru and Ecuador. It is distinguished by 4 irregular horizontal stripes formed by pearly spots, running from the eye to caudal peduncle. They alternate dark grey to black, and iridescent white to greenish white. The caudal fin is short and not very colorful, and males have top and bottom streamers. The dorsal fins have light colored beige to beige-green iridescent flaps which extend above the fin spines, and otherwise very full fins. They have a yellow to orange eye with a black bar below. Males have a pink or yellow spot at their pectoral fin base. They get 1 3/4 to 2 inches long. They are assigned to the eunotus complex of Apistos. Nothing else is known about them yet. This description is based on 9 specimens and some new pictures, which can be viewed at "Images of Apistogramma aguarico".
