Live Rock

What exactly is "Live Rock"? How can a rock be alive? If there is Live Rock there must be Dead Rock?? What makes a rock live and how does it die? How do you keep a rock alive? This sounds like the Pet Rocks they use to sell in novelty stores years ago. I'm very confused!!!

The rock does not grow if thats what you are thinking.
Live rock has microscopic organism living on them, or in them.
In order to keep it alive you must keep it in salt water.
They will die off if dryed out, and will stink very badly.
Then you have dead rock.
