Bio - balls in a reef tank

It had been the subject of debate that bio balls are bad for a Saltwater tank. There are many filtration methods used on reef tanks. I still use bio balls. What do you think? Negative / Positive?

positve for fish only
no good for reefs
Bio ball hold nitrates, alittle nitrates in a fish only ok not in a reef
where u want them as low as possible.
