broken center brace on 55 gal
Any thoughts about a broken center brace?
Its been slowly separating from the back and now its detached. I was going to reattach it with plexiglass and epoxy but when I cut the plexi I noticed there's a quarter inch difference in width between the side where I took the measurement and the center where the brace is which tells me there's some bowing. I put a pipe clamp on for my peace of mind but can the tank be salvaged? thanks, Dan Smith |

I had the same prob. with a 55gal. in my workplace maybe ten years ago.We used a whole tube of two part plastic epoxy and clamped it. Removed the clamp after a few days and it held fine, i think its still there holding up fine.

That's what I'm doing now. Epoxy on the plastic edge and putting a piece of plexi underneath the whole area.
thanks for getting back to me. Dan Smith |

I think the tank is built like that so you can put the glass covers On it , 1 0n each side but a 2 part epoxy should do the trick

Thanks for the advice but the repair didn't hold. Time to get that 90 gallon I've been dreaming of.

Broken Brace
I have fixed a few over the years, and the only good way to fix that is with glass
you need a piece of glass about 4" wide by 1/16 " less then the space between the 2 glass walls So if the space between the front and back glass is let say 13" then u cut the glass 12 15/16" just so there a little room for the silicone, glue it and tape it so it drys in place. It has to be thick not 1/8 " i like to use 3/8" u might get away with 1/4" but i would try for 3/8" and u have to use aquarium silicone, let it dry for atleast 3 days to fully cure and that will hold. |
