Default Cichlid Profiles - Blue Acara

Aequidens pulcher, the Blue Acara, looks a lot like a larger version of the Flag Acara. They live in Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Trinidad and Tabago, but are commonly captive bred. they have a base color of blue to steel gray, occasionally greenish yellow, with 5 - 8 vertical body bars witha dark prominent spot in the center of the body. The dorsal fin has a red margin and there are sparkly green-blue pearls scattered all over the body, and light blue to blue-white short stripes below the eye on its rather thick head. The belly is light blue. The tail is often suffused with red and blue and is compressed. The colors meld into each other. They are fairly peaceful and reach 7 inches in length. The males have a very slight nuchal hump.

These Acaras like pH from 6.5 to 7.5 and are very pH temperature tolerant (72-85 degrees). They light soft to slightly hard water, They are carnivores which eat insects, crustaceans, and worms. in captivity they like brine shrimp, blood and black worms., pellets and most meaty foods.

In the aquarium, the like sand substrates with sturdy plants and hide rocks. they will uproot small plants they can breed at 4 inches. They need atleast a 30 gallon tank, are good tank mates for fiarly peaceful fish in tanks 55 gallons and up, and will breed at high temperature in a 40 gallon breeder or larger. They are substrate breeders, and very aggressive good parents. They are also promiscuous and will breed several times a year. See "Images of Blue Acaras" for pictures.
