Default Ccichlid Profiles - Cichlasoma boucourti

Also known as the Golden Mojarra or Chisel Tooth Cichlid this large beautiful polychromatic fish is highly prized. It is a resident of the Atlatic Slopes of Guatamala and Belize, in rivers and lakes. The ground color of the fish is lemon yellow, somtimes with a rose belly and the body is suffused with iridscent areas of gold, rose, red-orange, green and bright blue. They have a generally fragmented midbody dark line or series of splotches, which extend vertically as 6 or 7 broken vertical bars. There is a caudal peduncle spot as well. The fins are usually pearly white. There may be black peppering above the lateral line. The adults reach 12+ inches and are oval but heavy bodied. The males have longer fin streamers than the females.

They like rocky tanks in captivity. They have been bred in captivity in tanks as small as a 40 breeder, but 100 gallons is recommended. They lay about 300 eggs which they protect, but the female does most of the work while the male stands guard. The fry are moved from the hatching surface to a pit. Males are more aggressive than females, but both are moderately aggressive. Males in breeding color rival Flowerhorms in the intensity and variation of color. They can be kept in very large community tanks with fast moving Characins and moderately large catfish, but not with other cichlids. Pictures available at "Images of Cichlasoma boucourti."
