Default flame scallop

Are flame scallops hard to keep? Do you have to feed them?

Default Flame Scallop

While Flame Scallops are beautiful, they are very short lived. they are filter feeders. They do not have to be target fed. One of the problems is they do not stay where you put them. They move around alot untill they find a spot they are happy wtih, usually somewhere you can't see them very well. They only live about 2 years, and you have no way of knowing how old they are when purchased. So you can be getting a scallop that is already almost 2 years old so they don't have very long to live. If you are going to get one try picking a small one, so it possibly young.

you're right steve, i've never had them live for more than about a year. From my experience their biggest enemie is change in water parameters/alk levels. They just disolve and their 2 white shells are all that is left.

I always kept them in the refugium so that they have plenty of water carrying their food pass by and they were easy to see because there was no "mountain" of rocks for them to hide in.
