Default K2 Monster Fish Convention

This event just concluded at the Sheraton Parsippany, sponsored by Aqueon,, and was quite succesful. attended by about 200-250 people, and Aqueon gave away a custom tank at each speaker's presentation. Jeff Rapps, Daves Rare Fish, the United Flowerhorn Association, Sera and about half a dozen other vendors were there. There were 10 speakers who ranged from fair to outstanding: Kudos going to Ken Davis' Monster Fish of Uruguay which was one of the most riveting best narrated talks I've heard since my address to the Smithsonian Institution on Symbiosis of Serpulid Worms and Devonian Brachiopods when I was 18. As I did, he insisted on referring to fish only by their scientific binomens (There are actually 3 species of Angelfish, 2 of which we have auctioned just as Angelfish). Also worthy of mention was frenetic 3D Scootor Tour of the Pet Trade in Saigon. There was plentifood food and libations, including some of strangest beers I've ever seen. Every vendor let you put your name on the used raffle tickets and put them in their own boxes & had their own raffles as well, and I got a Kamfa Flowerhorn. I bought a triple hybid Synodontis catfish (decorus plus 2 other species) and a Vampire Pleco. There were some really strange fish: Vampire Tetras, lots of obscure Amphilophine cichlids ( I got 4 little Haitian Nasties ) several species of Leporinus, and some of the Geophagus and Ceibals of Uruguay, and well as lots of poorly known little Asian fish. Also 2 auctions.

The convention was like a cross between an Expo, one of our monthly meetings and the Giant Auction. The Sheraton hotel is a like a big gloomy palace, and there was lots of good food. The exhibtors varied from high interest vendors like Aqueon, Sera, Dave's Rare Fish, Jeff Rapps, and the United Flowerhorn Association to handcrafted fish hiding tunnels. The raffle tickets were used twice: once for an Aqueon tank after each talk, and then with your name on them in boxes at each vendor station for their own prizes. The attendees and organizers tended to be rather cliquish except for the vendors. Overall at $55 with meals, it was a great bang for the buck.
