Default Cichlid Profiles - Bluemouth cichlid

Amphilophus nourissati, the Bluemouth Cichlid, is a resident of the Usamacinta River Basin of the Atlantic slope of Mexico and Guatemala. It is variable in color but characterizied by blue lips, a rust-orange forehead and gill cover, 5 dark body blotches behind the operculum, the 2nd and 3rd of which are often connected into an "H", and a spot at the begining of the tail. The fins are pearly. The ground color may be be iridescent green-yellow or brown. Some specimens are mostly brown, or have very exaggerated stripes and are mostly black. They have sloping foreheads and slightly pointy heads. In some, the body bars only go from belly to lateral line.

The Bluemouth gets 9 to 10 inches long and is an omnivore that also eats detritus, seeds and insects. In the aquarium it accepts pellets, flakes and frozen foods. It is only mildly aggressive, and can be a community fish with tank mates roughly its own size. It is an open water swimmer which appreciates a few rock hides. It is a typical amphilophine substrate spawner that lays and protects up to 600 eggs in a nest. Tank size for this species is 70 to 125 gallons. See "Images of Bluemouth Cichlid" for pictures.
