Default Cichlid Profiles - Flag Acara

Laetacara curviceps, the Flag Acara of Dwarf Flag Cichlid is one of the most personable small South American cihlids. It gets 5 inches long but most are 3 to 4 inches with an oval body. It is found in backwaters and slow moving rivers, lakes, and ponds of the lower Rio Negro and the Amazon Basin. They are very peaceful, like plants, and often live in subdued light areas. They like temperature of 78-82 and pH of about 6-6.5. They are good tankmates for Angelifsh, Discus, Apistos, and other peaceful Amazon fish. They pair up for life at an early age, are substrate or flat leaf plant breeders, but ferry their young from place to place in their mouths.

The coloration is very complex and very variable. most have a dark spot on the dorsal fin and an indistinct back line just above the latera line. The dorsal fin has a red rim, is usally gold , blue and yellow in the rear portions with conspicuouos pearling. The upper half of the body ranges from yellow-green to gold to light blue to purrple, and the belly is often coppery and there is conspicuous pearling on the unpaired fins. The tail is yellow or gold often with pearling. They can change color very quickly, and all the colors seem to blend without distinct margins.

They were very popular in the hobby many years ago, not so much now, but are great community tank cichlids. See "Images of Laetacara curviceps" for pictures.
