Default Cichlid Profiles - Double Spot Acara

Aequidens pallidus, the Double Spot Acara is peaceful 6-8" fish that lives in the most extreme acid soft waters of the Amazon. It is found near river banks and swamps, and likes pH of 4.3 to 5.3, and temperature of 77-81 degrees. They are found in close association with bog wood and roots.

They have two large black spots, one at midbody bordered by 2 very short white to orange bars, and one black spot on the caudal peduncle which may be bordered by a small orange bar. The ground color ranges from green-yellow to blue green to brown to gray to white. As do many Acaras, it has a green wormy lines under its chin. The eye is red. Males get an inch or two larger than females, have longer fins and a thicker forehead.

They are good moderate sized tank Amazonian community aquarium fish. They are good tank mates for Angelfish if you get their pH up a bit. They should have driftwood hides in their tank. Because of their strong preferences for very soft acid water, they are seldom bred in captivity. See "Images of Aequdiens pallidus " for photos.
