Cichlid Profiles - Apistogramma arua
This small dwarf cichlid hails from the Amazon and Arapiuns river basins, in areas of shallow acid and soft water, with substantial leaf litter. it lives at pH 5-6, in temperatures of 79-82 degrees. The predominant color can be shades of brown, green-brown, or briliiant turquoise. The fins are the same color as the prevailing body color. The eye is red, and sends a black stripe down to the bottom of the gill cover. there is a black midbody stripe from eye to tail, and 7 vague vertical body bars. There are also 5 spots or a dark line at the juncture of the dorsal fin and body.
This Apisto averages 1.7 inches for males, 1.4 inches for females. They are polygamous cave spawners. Eggs are laid on the cave celings and are tended by the female predominantly. The males will squabble , but they are very gentle with other species. A pair can be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium. Pictures available at 'Images of Apistogramma arua."
